GOVERNORS

The Callow End Governing Body are a diverse group of people, all volunteers, with a common interest in the school, its staff, pupils and the community of which it forms a part of. Each Governor brings different strengths and skills to the Governing Body, but all have a commitment to helping the school.

Callow End Governors are made up from the following:

  • 4 Parent Governors
  • 1 Governor appointed by the Local Authority
  • 2 Community Governors
  • 2 Foundation (Church) Governors
  • 1 Associate Governor
  • 3 Staff Governors

Governors are an important part of our school and have responsibility for the effective management of the school.

The day-to-day running of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher, but any decisions about change and developments in school policies, staff appointments, premises, finance and Special Needs provision have to be approved by the Governing Body.

This requires an understanding of how the school works and is only achieved by developing and maintaining close working relationships with the Headteacher, staff, children and their parents.

A full Governing Body meeting is held at least every half term. Governor committees meet frequently to discuss Staffing, Curriculum, Finance and Premises matters.

GOVERNOR PROFILES

Frances Betts

Frances moved to Callow End with her husband over twenty years ago and was a Chemistry Teacher until her retirement a few years ago. She is a member of the congregation at St. James' Church, where she is currently one of the Church Wardens' assistants and for the past three years has been the co-ordinator for Junior Church.

Frances has been a Foundation Governor at Callow End Primary School for seven years and is a member of the Staffing and Curriculum Committee.

She is often seen around the village walking with her black labrador Clive!

Karole Chacksfield

Karole lives in Worcester with her husband John and two children, Joe and Daisy, whom both attend Callow End Primary School. Karole divides her time between being a qualified Dental Nurse and running her own successful face painting company - The Daisy Face Company. When she gets any spare time her hobbies include cooking, baking, photography and socialising with family and friends.

As a Parent Governor, Karole feels very passionate about being a part of her children's education and giving something back in return to the school. As part of the Governing Body she feels able to contribute using her own experiences as a parent, working mother and member of the Friends Association.

Rev. Sue Irwin

For the last twenty-five years Sue has been a Governor of various schools, and has served on almost all the sub-committees that exist at one time or another. Currently, as well as being a Governor at Callow End, she is Vice Chair of the Governors at Powick CofE (Controlled) School, and a Governor of Madresfield CofE (Aided) School.

Sue is Vicar of the Parish of Powick, and of the Parish of Guarlford and Madresfield with Newland. Coming originally from Essex, and after working in Stock Exchange Investment in the City of London, she was first ordained into the Church's ministry in Birmingham 30 years ago.

Among her current interests, as well as singing with several choirs, she plays violin in the school orchestra at Powick, is a committee member of the Worcestershire Cottage Garden Society, and a Parish Councillor at Madresfield.

Various needlecrafts fill any idle moments, between gardening - particularly roses, 'Friends of Cathedral Music' charity and keeping in touch with a large collection of her own friends and a handful of remaining relatives, not to mention reading, driving, dancing, the internet, eating plain chocolate...

Jane Lloyd

Alison Lovegrove

Alison has previously been a Parent Governor for four years, three of those years being Chair. She is now an Associate Member helping and supporting the other Governors at school.

She has one child left at Callow End and feels lucky to have been involved in the education and wellbeing of her children at such a lovely friendly village school.

She has lived in Callow End for 18 years and sending her children to the village school has made them feel part of the community.

Suzanne Mealings

Suzanne lives in the village with husband Jim and son William who attends Callow End School.

Suzanne is a Project Manager in the Telecommunications industry and in any spare time enjoys keeping fit and reading.

She has been a Parent Governor for over two years and has recently been elected as Chair. She also sits on the Finance and Premises committee. She thoroughly enjoys both the contribution that she is able to make to the running of the school and the wider community.

Nicola Milton

Nicola joined the Callow End teaching staff in September 2009. She had been a Teaching Assistant at a Primary School in Germany for a number of years before qualifying as a Teacher.

She moved to Malvern in 2004, where she now lives with her husband and two children, one of whom now attends Callow End in Year 6.

Nicola enjoys spending her free time with her family and friends.

Sue Parker

Sue became a Governor of Callow End in September 2008 when she was appointed Headteacher. She says she was immediately struck by the supportive family atmosphere of the school and feels privileged and proud to be part of such a lovely community.

She came to teaching later in life, after following careers in the retail and finance industries, and a spell of time living and working in Hong Kong and Singapore. She finally settled in Worcester with her family in 1994 and has been there ever since!

Sue lives with her long term partner and two teenage daughters. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, going to the theatre, socialising with friends and playing golf.

Roy Pendleton

Roy has lived in the village since 1981 with his wife Sue. Daughter Claire and her family share the family home at Priors Court, where Claire runs a Riding School.

Roy has run businesses in South America as well as the UK, and currently runs a local house building company. Roy and his family feel they are so lucky to live in Callow End, which has many of the best features of village life.

A Governor for some nine years, Roy sees the school as a key focal point of the village and is pleased to be able to contribute to making it an even better school for our children. He has a granddaughter at the school and expects that two more grandchildren will be joining Callow End in the next few years.

David Stephens

Gemma Tomkinson

Gemma lives in Malvern, with her husband and two children – one who attends Callow End School, with the other due to start in Sept 2012.

Before having children, Gemma worked as an Account Manager for a large Fleet Hire and Management company, but was made redundant whilst on maternity leave. Now, she divides her time between looking after her two young children and being Company Secretary for her husband’s Engineering Business, which is based in Tewksbury.

She feels very fortunate to be able to send her children to such a close-knit, friendly village school and believes that by becoming a Parent Governor it has not only allowed her to become involved in her children’s education, but is also a way of supporting the continued progress of the school.

Robert Willetts

Robert moved to the village of Powick in 2010 with his wife Rita and brings many years of previous experience as both a parent and community governor at primary and secondary level, including chairmanship. Daughters Amy (Doctor) and Emma (Nurse) both work for the NHS in different parts of the country.

An engineering manager with a local authority for the last 30+ years, Robert enjoys reading, music, travel and football.

As retirement comes closer he has more time for greater involvement in the local community together with his other community role as a magistrate and looks forward to contributing to the development of the school.
